power pop and punk

Local Blogger Asks A Tampan:

Heya,

Gary and I were wondering if you could do a post (since you are the most popular blog), and ask if anyone knows good places on different nights to go see some power pop/punk bands play live. Good acts, decent locales, that kinda thing.

Addison

So, c’mon, punkers, where do you go on Mondays or Wednesdays?

Brass Mug used to play a lot of punk. Not sure about these days though. Worth a call though. They are located on Fletcher at 15th st.

Brass Mug will play punk bands, but you’re just as likely to hear Black Sabbath covers, emo, goth-type action, you name it. But hey, the drinks are cheap.

The State Theatre in St. Pete and the Orpheum in Ybor both do a good job of booking a lot of punk bands, though the State especially leans toward the new wave of punk. That’s okay as long as you’re willing to share the floor with a bunch of 16 year olds, but be warned.

Other than that all I remember from my die-hard punk days (I say it like it was ages ago, but it was more like 8 years) is being frustrated at the lack of places that cater to punk. Hopefully things have changed since then.

A slight aside: X, the 80s Cali punk band, is playing at Jannus on the 25th of this month. You’ll have to put up with Rollins Band too – I for one am tired of Henry – but if either or both are up your alley it might be worth checking out.

    Garage Bar in St. Pete
    Orpheum in Ybor

Why does it have to be a Monday or Wednesday?

It doesn’t. Blame quick typing, no thinking, and horrible writing. They are looking for the best places every day of the week…

We like Basic Rock Outfit, but he seems to be one of the few that we’ve seen that have a decent sound. Gary grew up here and in the late 70’s did some of the first punk scene here with friend of his in bands like Amnesia and Just Boys. He talked some guy who owned a biker bar on 40th St. called My Backyard to let him bring in bands and the guy agreed. Well, the flyers called it “The Maniac Lounge” (I think I still have some of the flyers from that.) Anywho, just interested to see if anyone knows of any good stuff around.
