camp sparkman to host militia
August 4, 1906 – Adjutant-General J. C. R. Foster of the Florida State Militia (precursor to today’s Florida National Guard) arrives in Tampa to plan for a statewide gathering of the militia. Over 1,500 men were expected during the two-day encampment, which would take place in Camp Sparkman, located just west of the State Fair Grounds (on the other side of present-day North Boulevard near the University of Tampa).
