reverend protests gaylord marriage
August 9, 1901 – An irate man burst into the office of Judge Joseph Robles to protest the marriage of his daughter, who he claimed was under 16 years old, to a young man named Nathan Gaylord, who lived in the Town of Fort Brooke (now the Channelside area). The father, Reverend E. F. Averill, was eventually proven wrong – his daughter had turned 16 in April, and therefore was legally eligible to marry. The newlyweds took up residence, against Reverend Averill’s wishes, in Mr. Gaylord’s home.
