August 25, 1846 – Howell Tyson Lykes, pioneer Tampan and patriarch of the Lykes family, is born in Columbia, South Carolina. Lykes’ seven sons formed the Lykes Brothers Corporation, which had a hand in almost every facet of Tampa’s, and Florida’s, economy for most of the 20th Century.
