September 3, 1971 – The University of South Florida unveils plans for the construction of five new buildings on its campus. The new buildings, estimated at a total cost of $39 million ($185 million in today’s dollars), included a research library, bookstore, a medical building and two phases of the medical school complex. USF President Dr. Cecil Mackey said that the “total building plan will increase the value of the university physical plant facilities by two-thirds from our present $60 million to more than $100 million.”
