communist party locked out
September 13, 1936 – A padlock and chain on the iron gates of the United Secret Orders Hall at 10th Ave. and 15th St. prevents Earl Browder, the Communist Party nominee for president, from speaking at a scheduled appearance. Alfred Bell, state secretary of the Communist Party, said that the party would sue the city for damages, while Browder wrote letters of protest to Police Chief Woodruff and a telegram to President Roosevelt. The chain and lock were eventually removed, but the estimated crowd of 350 were requested not to enter and all went home. Browder left Tampa the following day without making an official public appearance.
