don’t smush this bug

I took my friend Jade, a 26 year old virgin, to see Bug, a play with a scene of delicious nudity (if you’re into fake boobs). I was so proud to be in the room with her as she viewed her first real live penis. After sizing things up, she had so many questions for me. At intermission I got to strap on two of my favorite hats: those of teacher and interpersonal relationship coach (if only advising oneself was as easy). She wondered if the nudity was necessary, if the actors were uncomfortable, and what is considered exceeding anatomical expectations.

The necessity of nudity is always questionable. But thank the goddess for once it wasn’t just the chick laying it all out. Is it art because it’s theatre and not Lethal Weapon 2? Is it a marketing technique to get more people into seats? The playwright might have his own motivation and opinion on this, but ultimately it comes down to the interpretation of each audience member. Which is the essence of this play anyway.

The story unfolds amid alcoholism and drug use followed up with a healthy dose of paranoia. Does the former lead to the latter?

The second half is reminiscent of Goodfellas, when a coked out Liotta erratically drives away from supposed helicopters. Determining what is real and what is real to you…it’s all in your perception. Kinda like network news.

We are living in a time when it’s safer to be paranoid. The Man will label you a crazed liberal in attempts to discredit you, but is he faking us all out to cover his own ass?

Don’t judge until you have experienced it for yourself.

Bug is playing at the Gorilla Theatre through September 24th. 813.879.2914. Directed by Ami Sallee Corley. Starring Jessica Ferrarone, Tim Seib, Javi Mulero, Leah Lo Schiavo and Steve Garland.

Thursdays at 7 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m., Sundays at 3 p.m.

Tell Jade it’s OK, I was a virgin til I was 40. They made a movie about it, with a really cool song by Joe Walsh.

She’s one of the few people who views sex just as a means to procreate. what a freak. but we love her anyway. (and joe walsh.)

should think about “boob” comments more as a society. Not everyone has implants b/c they want massive/different breasts. I know for a fact that this was one of the hardest things this actress had to do b/c she had been thru a traumatic medical issue which brought about her seemingly “cosmetic surgrey”. She knew what people would think: “‘Nother actress w/fake t%#$”…Not defending her, specifically, but making a general comment about how fast we are to make snap judgements… Especially in situations that lend themselves perfectly to current scenarios. I would have thougt the same thing if I didn’t KNOW, but since I do, just thought I’d share…

As much as I try not judge, along comes a moment of humour or my own self consciousness and all falls by the wayside. Thanks for making me stop & think on that.
