September 18, 1946 – France receives the first addition to its post-war merchant fleet in a ceremony at the Tampa Shipbuilding Company docks. P.B. Brill, president of Tampa Shipbuilding, turned over the 2800-ton Canche to Rene Mogin, a representative of the French Maritime Commission. Present at the commissioning ceremony were officers of the French navy, representatives of the French government, and shipyard officials. Captain Raymond Sazias hoisted the French tricolor on the ship after the American flag had been lowered, and then led the Canche on its maiden voyage to New York.
