September 20, 1946 – The finance committee of the city board of representatives launches a motion to raise license fees on jukeboxes and pinball machines to offset a proposed cutback in the property tax by Mayor Curtis Hixon. It was the first step in a surprise program in which board members also called for license increases on taxicabs and postage stamp vending machines. Strong protests by jukebox and pinball machine distributors forced the committee to revise the license fee to an increase of $10 instead of $50 ($102 and $513 in today’s dollars).
