The Sunshine Editor has come up with a unique proposal for limiting problems in Ybor.
This would be the deal. The City offers a special permit for nightclubs and bars to sell alcohol for one more later, if the clubs agree to two provisions: no drink specials other than 2-for-1, and no allowing anyone under 21 years of age to enter. The City could even offer to make that two extra hours, if no one under 23 years of age are permitted. Those who don’t could still face the end of certain drink specials anyway, so I think most clubs would look to get something instead of nothing.
That’s thinking outside the box. Mayor Pam ought to give it a look.

Saturday I got treated to a swirling fight between about 40-50 kids on 7th at 19th st. Somebody fired a pistol and they scattered. Nobody seemed to have been hit. Are we sure that heavy drinkers are the problem?

Regulation of that idea seems like a nightmare!

i can tell you, Rachel is right. enforcement would be sporadic and unbalanced. poorly connected bar owners would be targeted. savvy bar owners would just take advantage of it, find loopholes etc. think of the noise ordinance and the lapdance ordinance. feel-good legislation, sporadic or non-existant enforcement. and if it did work, lots of military-age people would be discriminated against. it is worth noting that the sunshine editor has many factual errors in the story. for instance, bars already close at 3 in tampa/hillsborough, every night of the week. good chamber of commerce job by sikorski mortgage above. i’ve worked nights every weekend in ybor for 12 years and never had any problems.

Bar owners will never give up 18 year old girls, as that is their gravy train. The scumbag 21-and-up boys arrive in droves to hit on and buy drinks for the underage girls. “Oh, but they have X’s on their hands” — hilarious.

Hey – without question, every move iorio makes in/at ybor are a big pain in the ass for bar owners and others. The above is just a suggestion to make it a bit more palatable. We here in the sticks think she oughta quit picking on ybor city entrepreneurs. But she won’t…
to rachel & bar owner – regulation for this would be no more difficult than checking drink special prices.
This alternative idea would encourage younger people to stay out of ybor – perhaps the same youngsters that Jason saw around him fighting…

“Keep the teenagers out of Ybor”? well you can’t restrict 18 and 19 year olds from entering a part of the city, and as far as kids under 18, isn’t there already a curfew in effect? I forget if it was ever repealed or not. Also
“good chamber of commerce job by sikorski mortgage above.”
its sikorskE !
I’m just happy somebody clicked on my link. That was just what I saw Saturday night, check it out on the TPD site, just before midnight there was a fight call there. I don’t know that the chamber of commerce (is there an Ybor Chanber?) would nessesarily like to publicise a fight but if you think so…

In response to Jason- the city wide curfew for kids under 18 was found to be unconstitutional. However, there is still a separate “child protection ordinance” active in the Ybor City historic district. This ordinance is in effect from Thursday through Saturday nights starting at 11pm, I believe.
