airport ranked sixth
JD Power has an annual airport survey too. That one came out in June, and compared airports within North America. According to JD Power, TIA is now only the sixth best medium sized airport on the continent.
Those better than Tampa’s now?
- LaGuardia International
- Chicago-Midway International
- Baltimore/Washington International
- Cleveland Hopkins International
- Pittsburgh International
But what do these surveys really mean? Conde Nast business travelers say Portland has the best airport and Orlando third best, while this JD Power survey (it came out in June) says Portland ranks 25th out of 27 medium sized airports while Orlando got 15th out of 17 (large airports).
How we have slipped - Previous JD Power surveys (all for “medium sized airports):
- 2000: Best Domestic Airport
- 2002: 2nd Global Airport
- 2003: 4th Global Airport (passengers)
- 2004: 6th Global Airport
- 2006: 6th Domestic Airport

This survery is obviously crap. BWI is a nightmare. It’s ugly, crowded and not near anything. TIA is certainly better by a long shot. Although, there are no direct flights to Iceland from here…

Iceland? You can barely get to the UK from here! But that’s not TIA’s fault. Airlines think they can do better flying in and out of Orlando and Miami than here. See why they’re all going under?

Laguardia is flat out dangerous. There are too many incoming and outgoing flights on their two runways. I don’t want to even consider flying into (or out of) LaGuardia in the future.

I think JD Power needs to stick to rating cars.

Indeed, I’d take Tampa over Cleveland any day.

Really, no love for LaGuardia? Let’s face it - an NYC airport is going to be busy. Apart from the dicey landing - it looks like you’re going to crash right into the water - I much prefer LGA to JFK.
Tampa is improving in the direct flight department. Long-haul flights from here are usually more expensive than taking connections to bigger airports; but if you’re more concerned with time than money, TIA is getting better all the time. Then again the wife and I caught a direct to London that was cheaper than flying out of Miami.

TIA over Atlanta
TIA over Detroit
TIA over O’Hare - oh my god yes
TIA doesn’t need disco light tunnels and moving sidewalks and miles of overpriced giftshops; it’s an excellent airport because you can get through it quickly and you don’t need a bunch of diversions to keep irritated travellers happy and moving. And everywhere it smells like Cinnabuns — what a great welcome home.

when i can drive 12 minutes to the airport in no traffic(i live in s tampa), park effortlessly in long term parking, WALK less than 2 minutes into the terminal and be at my gate within 25 minutes of leaving my house, i call that #1 in my book. I ravel ALOT, and conveinience, convenience, convenience is key, clean, well lit, modern, easy to manuever, and no more then 1000 feet of walking ANYWHERE in the terminal!!!Also, most major cities are all non-stop and cheap.
