Condé Nast Traveler just released the results of their annual survey of business travelers. You may recall that Tampa’s airport has been a favorite of this survey’s respondents for years, but no more. The top honors now go to Portland’s airport. So, how did they jump ahead of Tampa? According to the magazine:
Years of costly renovations have paid off: Oregon’s Portland International takes first prize among domestic airports, thanks to easy access (travelers can reach downtown in 38 minutes by rail, for less than $2 per person), an array of shops (including hometown favorites Nike and Powell Books), and free wireless Internet access throughout the main terminal.
Yeah – For those in Tampa who care, I’d really like to highlight that first bit – travelers can reach downtown in 38 minutes by rail. Food for thought.
By the way – Orlando’s airport ranked third in the study.

Well, it doesn’t take 38 minutes to reach Downtown Tampa by car or taxi — even in rush hour traffic. Not sure that’s such a great reason.

I’ve never like Orlando, but I guess that’s just me.
One thing is for sure, in all of my travels, Tampa is a great airport and represents our area well. Maybe a little better than we deserve, but that’s another story.

You know, I want to bring up something that Dave posted over at Tampa Rail and what one of the commentors pointed out in that article.
Dave points out a new “Miracle” tool from Google (for the tech savvy, it’s just an overdue tool) that lets you coordinate trips trips on HARTline through Google’s site.
OK, that’s good.
It’s pointed out in coments though that you can’t even reach the airport through HARTline and the nearest bus takes 46 MINUTES to make the 9 mile trek from the Airport post office (where the nearest bus arrives) to downtown.
It’s a 15 minute drive. It’d be understandably longer with rail (stations) but how can’t the county bus service directly service the Airport to begin with? It’s a joke!

After traveling Europe, Asia and North America, we have a great airport.

For sometime there was a discussion about putting in a rail system to the airport. After months of ‘interested’ parties adding input — the end plan was to build a 4 mile line that ended at the westhore mall (not international). Seriously. It was scrapped for obvious reasons. Tampa bay is one of the largest metro areas in the country. If other cities can build them we can too.

It’s got to be a large, regional system though Lee… And yet we’re very divided regionally. Some of the government doesn’t believe in cross-county support, nor do they fathom people commuting between counties for work, school, medical purposes or recreation.
