macdill airmen making tampa home

November 8, 1946 – Capt. George Byrnes, Public Relations Office for MacDill Field, tells directors of the Tampa Chamber of Commerce that MacDill ranks first among the half-dozen ranking Army airfields in the country according to number of service personnel. Byrnes noted that the field had rebounded from a post-war low the previous year of 5,000 to 7,000 in 1946. He also said that the majority were technicians stationed here for long periods, thus are buying homes and becoming citizens of Tampa. Byrnes himself served as a wartime bomber pilot and spent more than a year as a Nazi prisoner of war.
