I was Googling Rattlesnake, FL and discovered your article. The reason for my inquistiveness, a framed diploma, given to me as a joke. The diploma was from Florida University of Fresh & Salt Water Fishing. P.O. Box 100, Rattlesnake, FL. The recipient of the diploma was H.H ” Gillie” GILLESPIE. It was presented to ‘Gillie” 11 November 1953. Some of the “professors” KING TARPON ( Dean of Trolling), CHAMP MACKEREL ( Dean of Cssting), SALT W. TROUT ( Dean of Women Fishermenn ) BIG M. BASS ( Dan of Sport Fishing), SPECK PERCH ( Dean of Fly Fishing ), BLUE BREAM ( Dean of Pole Fishing). Sounds like a “well stocked” curriculum. Hey, thanks for the insite into tHe place once know as RATTLESNAKE, FL.

I have a picture taken of me in Rattlesnake FL. We (my Mom, Dad Higgins, Grandma and Grandpa Raub) rented the 1st PO Box (Box # 13, it was in the Tampa Tribune paper. I sure would love to have a copy of that newspaper clipping with dad and Grand dad’s picturethere in the Post Office). I walked approx. 2 mile to the Prt Tampa School. We had a Texico Gas station on the corner pass the PO This was before Mac Dill was built. Old man Gandy came everyday for gas cigar crackers andTropical Ale, Cost? 25 cents total.

i spent this past weekend trying to find a trace of rattlesnake florida as i was born there in 1952-it actually says that was my place of birth on birth certificate.

I was born and raised in Rattlesnake and now reside in Port Tampa. To be honest I had no idea about the history of the area. Verry interesting

My uncle Edward Zalva was Chief of Police for Rattlesnake,Florida. He was also a Hillsborough county Deputy Sheriff for many.
It is really amazing how few Floridian know about Rattlesnake, Florida.
