November 13, 1996 – The University of South Florida culminates its 40th anniversary celebration with performances, fireworks and the dedication of the campus’s new $1.8 million plaza dedicated to Martin Luther King, Jr. The ceremony featured an American Indian’s prayer dedicated to USF, a poem written and recited by Tampa poet James Tokley honoring King and the plaza, and a re-enactment of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. USF President Betty Castor said during her remarks that the university had “taken strong steps as an institution to invest in the dreams and in the legacy of Dr. King.”
