November 14, 1976 – Tampa police officer J.W. Preston is dragged for more than half a mile when the driver of a car he stopped sped away with his arm caught inside the vehicle. Preston pulled over Leon Feldon in Ybor City for driving as though he might be under the influence of alcohol. When Preston reached through the window to put the car in park, Feldon sped off while the officer clinged to the window frame. The driver finally hit a utility pole half a mile away at Morgan Street and Seventh Avenue, but attempted to run over Preston while backing up his car. Feldon was arrested several hours later and charged with attempted murder.
