November 16, 1941 – The U.S.S. Emerald, a floating re cruiting station for the Navy, concludes its weekend stay in Tampa. The ship came to Tampa to re cruit men for special inshore patrol duty and docked alongside the Jose Gaspar in the Bayshore yacht basin. Lieut. R.W. Graham, commander of the Emerald, said that for the most part service would be confined to the home waters with which the men are familiar. P ay ranged from $36 to $104 ($474 and $1370 in today’s dollars) per month based on prior ex perience.
