November 18, 1971 - A land swap deeding the Florida State Fairgrounds to the University of Tampa in exchange for university-owned riverfront property is announced by Mayor Dick Greco and U.T. President Dr. D.B. Owens. The land exchange involved the 33.11 acres of fairground property and 23.72 acres of riverfront land acquired by the school from the Urban Renewal Agency in 1969. Greco and Owens praised the deal for producing mutual benefits. Owens noted that the acquisition of the fairgrounds would pave the way for university expansion and improvement, while Greco said that the transaction would provide much needed recreational facilities for the city.
