together as brothers
November 19, 1961 – In an event marred by a bomb scare before his arrival, the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., attends his first and only public event in Tampa in front of a crowd of 4,200 at the Fort Homer Hesterly Armory. King told those attending the meeting sponsored by the Florida State Conference of NAACP branches that “we must live together as brothers, or perish as fools.” He promised the audience that segregation was passing away and the rewards of freedom and human dignity would soon be at hand.
