December 22, 1936 – The City of Tampa’s new 1 cent gasoline tax goes into effect today. The new tax would push the cost of gas in the city to 22 cents per gallon ($2.96 in today’s dollars). The tax was expected to raise approximately $12,000 ($161,000 today) a month for the city’s street fund, which would fund work performed by the WPA. Today’s Bayshore Boulevard was one of the WPA’s local road projects.
