hyde park burglaries

December 30, 1896 – A crime wave hits Hyde Park when thieves focus on the pantries of the homes in the Tampa suburb. The most recent victim was Dr. Sumter L. Lowry, who lost a “cooked ham, a chunk of roast, beef, desserts, potatoes, celery, olives” and “a big piece of ice” from his ice box. Lowry would later gain fame as a General in the Florida National Guard, leading soldiers (including many locals) in battle in Mexico, Europe and the Pacific during the Mexican War, World War I and World War II. Lowry Park Zoo is named in his honor.

The Mexican War? Did he serve under Winfield Scott or Zachary Taylor?

Hello, My name is Dan Jenkins. My wife and I founded crime watch for the area near Kennedy and Howard in 1992. The crime was out of control, the place was filthy and at least 50 landlords didn’t give a rat’s a___. The neighborhood was fractured at best. My wife and I not only started the crime watch and a youth group for kids, we united the neighbors to fight back. Please ask any police officer or resident what is was like to work or live near Kennedy, Platt and Cleveland in those days prior to Post Hyde Park Village. Please join us on February 10th as we celebrate a 15 year anniversary of this historic neighborhood turnaround.

I would reprint articles on this subject, but the Tribune has laws against it and I don’t wan’t to create any bad press for my wife, Julie as she makes a run for city council.

Please call me with any questions 902-1175. Please spread the word. See invitation below.

    Thank you,

    Dan Jenkins
