To quote my fellow ninebullets contributor, Trevor:

“I’m very particular about music, and while some people assume I’m sticking to established genres or some other ignorant elitism, that’s simply not true. I like what I like, and it crosses all genres. The Ashes of Grisum is a great example of that. I don’t generally find a lot of blues that resonates with me, but the Ashes, with that mournful instrumentation and those wild, despairing vocals, really did it for me.”

The Ashes were a Tampa Bay area blues band that enjoyed a brief celebrity before completely fizzling out around the start of the new millennium. They were: Chris Temple (Singer / Songwriter / Acoustic & Electric Guitars), Vincent Saletto (Keyboards / Piano / Rhodes / Hammond B3), Robert Moore (Bass Guitar / Cello), Peter Adams (Acoustic & Electric Guitars / Lead Guitar / Slide Guitar) and Ant Reckart (Drums / Mandolin).

WTF does that have to do with the Tampa Bay area scene now? Nothing at all. However, some folks may remember the band and this post goes out to them and whomever else may find themselves curious.

The following is from Vinnie’s website:

“The final payments have been made to Morrisound Studios and the Ashes of Grisum’s unreleased 2nd album is now available for free download. Just feel free to click the link below, and look in the folders marked “spirit” and “flesh”. The album was going to be called “Completed Works Volume Two: The Spirit and the Flesh” and was going to be a double album. Well, as they say, the well laid plans of mice and men often go astray. Although I tell you, I think the music holds up rather well. Some of my greatest moments involving recording music stem from this album. Also, some of my worst.”

Wanna listen? GO GET IT!

Their myspace site is still up and apparently being maintained by someone. I remember waaaaay back in the day, long before Ashes I had a Chris Temple spoken word album on cassette. I can not remember the title of it to save my life but me and friends listened to that damned thing way too much. I wonder where he ended up and what he is doing these days.

Listen: Bored Beyond Benign

P.S. This has nothing to do with “local” music but everything to do with new music. Music For Robots  have  released their second compilation record, Music For Robots Vol. 2 is now available and at the bargain basement price of $10.  You can find details and the tracklisting in this post.

They were great, I was sad to see them fizzle …

I still have Completed Works on my Ipod and just heard “Tropic of Cancer” today. Those guys always made me smile. I head Chris Temple was in LA now, found him via a google search awhile back.
