That’s right! Mayor Pam Iorio has declared it Gayle Sierens Day for today, January 10, 2007.
As of this past Sunday, Gayle Sierens has been an anchor at WFLA NewsChannel 8 for 30 years. Apparently, that got the mayor’s attention. Sierens also was the first female to do play-by-play for an NFL television broadcast?
For this she gets her own day? It’s not like she kicked a 62 yard field goal or anything. Besides, we know who in that family has all the talent – Gayle’s husband Mike! Just kidding, Gayle – we all love you!
(sheesh, it looks like the mayor got all those whereases off of Gayle’s Wikipedia entry.)
So, how does your family celebrate Gayle Sierens Day?

When am I going to get a “day” for just doing my job? Maybe I need a new job that only requires that I work on it for a few hours a week six-months a year (field goal kicking). Or better yet, sitting behind a desk reading for 22 minutes thrice a day.
How about the guy who shows up to his job at the toll-booth six days a week, is nice to everyone, gives good directions, and doesn’t complain much? Shouldn’t he have a day? What about all the rest of the work-a-day people who really make a difference?
That’s why the whole Cal Ripken Jr thing years ago pissed me off (in the news again because he’s going into the Hall). Whoop-dee-doo. The guy showed up for HIS JOB every day. Wait, three times a week. Six months out of the year.
How much money did the people of Tampa waste on Gayle Sierens day and Matt Bryant day? If it was more than the cost of printing up a certificate, it was too much.
Okay, rant over.

Give Gayle props for staying in Tampa when she had opportunities to move up to the bigtime. Other TV hacks in this market keep waiting for NYC, Bristol, etc., to jangle their cell phones. They really shouldn’t hold their breath. Especially at 28.
