kid arrested for scissor threats

The Associated Press tells us about the 9-year-old who was arrested:

NORTH PORT - A 9-year-old North Port boy is accused of threatening three girls on a school bus with scissors… The boy was arrested… and charged with possession of a weapon on school property and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

… the boy thought the girls were talking about him, but it’s not clear if the boy only made verbal threats or if he had any physical contact with the girls…  The boy was suspended from school pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.

You’ve got to be kidding me.  Is this what we’ve come to? When stuff like that went down at my school we were suspended, or given detention.  But arrested? Three counts of aggravated assault?  He’s nine! The kid has no idea what that even means.  Not to defend him, but girls can be mean at that age.

I’m glad it took the police to calm the situation down.  The bus driver took the blade away from the boy before any harm could be done, but had the driver or a teacher physically intervened, as they should have in the real world, they would probably have been sued.  But this ain’t the real world anymore.

Our tax dollars are hard at work arresting 9 year olds for scissors.

All teachers should be issued tasers and allowed to use them free of repercussions three time per day.

    Kate let me hear you!

Blade schmade. They were probably safety scissors. Left handed at that.

    How is this not assault?

Girls ARE mean at that age. But without full details, we can’t be sure what’s going on here.

When I think back on all the things my friends and I did when we were kids, we should have been thrown in jail also. Instead of the law crashing down on us, we had a greater threat: our parents!

    “How is this not assault?”

It is, and if he had stabbed the girls the county would have been liable. It is the effect of the school becoming a parent. Are we blaming the girls for being mean and saying that justifies threatening them with a weapon (ok I am assuming they weren’t safety scissors)? What if it had been your daughter that nine year old held a blade on? The failure happened long before this kid got on the bus.

I’m telling you - bad parents are ruining our schools and communities. It is as simple, and as complicated, as that.

  7. Sandy Says:

You’d be surprised how bad some 9-year olds can be. And scissors are deadly weapons. You’re not even allowed to run with them.

  8. dcdave Says:

One more time: The kid is nine. No one did get stabbed. Not assault. Apparently everyone forgets all the fun/dangerous shit that happened in their own elementary schools. The kid needs discipline, but arresting a nine year old is sad and pathetic.

  9. jason Says:

Actually that is the definition of assault. your thinking of battery which would have occurred had he stabbed the children. Aggravated Battery I think due to the weapon.
