It’s film festival season in the Bay area again…

*I recently had lunch with Eric Odum from the Gasparilla Film Festival.  He shared his celebrity encounter stories and showed me his photos from his recent trip to the AFI Fest in L.A.  I’m jealous! He told me about some of the actors the GFF is trying to bring to Tampa, but of course I’m sworn to secrecy on that part.  What I can mention, however, is that there are going to be some amazing Cuban films screened at the Festival, including 638 Ways To Kill Castro and Tell Me Cuba.

According to the various emails I’ve received on the subject, the Gasparilla Film Festival (February 28-March 4) is looking for volunteers.  No matter what your area of expertise is or how much time you can volunteer, the GFF can use your help.  Visit the volunteer page of their website to learn more.

*In case you missed the news, the Tampa Film Review has worked out an exchange with several other film festivals.  In September, the Guzzos and Nolan Canova (from www.crazedfanboy.com) will select the best film (possibly top 2 or 3) that has screened at this year’s TFRs.  The selected film(s) will be accepted into and will screen at the following film fests: Gasparilla Film Festival, Garden State Film Festival, Bare Bones Film Festival, Delray Beach Film Festival, Sunscreen Film Festival and Wildwood by the Sea Film Festival.

Also, every four months the Tampa Film Review is going to exchange films with the WILDSound Monthly Film Festival in Canada and the Home Brewed International Film Festival in Australia.  This exchange will bring international exposure to the TFR and to local films and filmmakers.

*The fifth annual Ybor Festival of the Moving Image is scheduled for April 19-22.  “This film festival screens a wide spectrum of unique documentaries, features, experimental works and live performances by established artists as well as students and emerging talent.  We are especially interested in works by Tampa Bay and Florida artists.” (received via email)

The YFMI is accepting film submissions through March 1.  Visit www.yborfilmfestival.com to access the YFMI’s Without A Box entry page or contact festival director David Audet at daudet(at)hccfl.edu or 813-253-7000, ext. 5179 for more info. (Thanks go to Guzzo Brother #1 and Eric Sturm for separately sending me details about this film fest.)

*There’s a new online film festival offered by the new website www.tampabayfilm.com.  I’ll write more on this soon, but wanted to mention it here.

*The Sunscreen Film Festival (April 6-8) has blossomed.  The SFF has outgrown the intimate setting of the wonderful Studio(at)620 and will move to the Renaissance Vinoy Resort in downtown St. Pete.  The festival has some new sponsors, has revamped its website and is currently accepting submissions through January 31.  Visit www.sunscreenfilmfestival.com to learn more.

*The Tampa Bay Jewish Film Festival has moved from its traditional February slot to March.  The 2007 festival will be March 14-25.  Visit www.jewishtampabay.com for more info.

*And don’t forget to mark your calendars for:

I’m spending the next few months holed up in various movie theaters.  See you in May.
