server the servants
(cross posted over at the ridiculously cheesy and mostly dormant Stonegauge )
Here’s a question for the business types and-or tech-gurus/geeks that read Sticks of Fire regularly: What web hosts have their web servers in Tampa Bay?
I’m not talking about Tampa Bay based web design and hosting companies who re-sell server space that is located in Maryland, Washington DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles and the like… I mean a web hosting company with tangible server assets here in Tampa Bay (that I can prove that be true by running a tracert on the domain names of sites that reside on said local servers).
I’m curious because I’ve searched in the past, and I’ve only found resellers — design companies that sell parts of their server space that they own with third parties. I’m not going to name names or point to web sites as evidence because I don’t want to give props to those folks who say they are a Tampa Bay web site hosting company and yet don’t have things based in the region whatsoever.

I’ve looked in the past, and I don’t think there are any whose servers are housed here. It would be interesting to poll all the local firms and see.
Bear in mind, that hurricanes can have a significant effect on available power. A local ISP would need significant resources to guarantee power.
There is at least one co-locating center here in Tampa, but they are not a hosting company.

I know for sure from past experience working for them) that Weblink Communications Inc (which turned into Hydrogen Media, which went tits up and turned into something else) that they used to have their tangible servers on-site (custom built, but this was 1998). They were a high-end design firm and not your standard web hosting company…. I know they relied on Netcom.com as their “router” (I think that’s the term) out onto the Net but even then — the routing station was in Tampa and WLCI was in Largo/Clearwater.
But honestly, I should have added this to my post, the location of your hosting company doesn’t matter so much any more… Sticks as well as Stonegauge.com, Boltsmag.com and many other local web sites are hosted in Los Angeles and show up just fine on your computer. Just the curiosity factor and local pride factor makes me wonder who is out their in TB and what are they charging?

This was a article on digg the other day.
It’s a map showing the worst places to host a server. Florida is one of the worst. http://royal.pingdom.com/?p=79

That map is about the worst places because of natural disaster threat. It doesn’t mean you can’t or shouldn’t have a web hosting firm in those regions.
Sago has server space in the Bay area.
