diving into dives

I am starting a new series on lesser known Bay area hangouts in Ybor and elsewhere.

Now that I have plenty of time and nobody to mind me so I will check out the hole in the wall joints that you see in passing but never seem to get to. Coming soon you will see stuff on the Crowbar, Boneyard, Pegasus Lounge, and the Brass Mug. I am looking for the cheapest joints, with no or a very small cover. Places that should see more patronage but for whatever reason they do not. I firmly believe that what is really hurting our young folks today is not drugs or political apathy or mounting personal debt but instead the popularity of cheap corporate drinking establishments such as Adobe Gila’s, Bahama Mama’s, and Gameworks. Gameworks? You are adults mind you are screaming kids and pimple faced employees really the atmosphere you want to sip your $8 Scotch in?

If you have favorite bar/dive/juke joint that you think I should visit please leave it in the comments.

    “Kahuna’s off Gandy”

Really? Next to the trailer park? Well…OK but if I get hit on by that old biker chick again I am telling her to get loat, I don’t care if it IS your mom Matt.

One I have not been in but would love to check out some time in my neighborhood alone are: MacKenzies(behind Circle K on Westshore), I Dont Care Bar and Grill(on Manhatten), Pete’s Place(on Henderson). Can you check em out for me? THANKS!

The L.A. Hangout isn’t really a “hole in the wall” anymore, but folks used to the South Tampa scene might not have been to Lutz’s best (and only) bar that features live music two nights a week, Team Trivia, karaoke, Country Dance Night, and college night all at the same place — and no cover, ever, afaik.

You should check it out. If you do, get a hold of me, because I’m usually there.

    oh yeah, the mousetrap.

I’ll second the LA Hangout. I can go there and not feel like an old loser, since the crowd is more or less my age (late 20s to mid 30s).

Tiny Tap + PBR = Good Cheap Night Out

There’s a place called the Overtime Pub on Fowler just west of I-75. When I drive by it during the day, they usually have the front door open, presumably to air the place out. That’s my guess because I swear I can see the smoke oozing out.

I’ve never been stonesy enough to go in despite driving by a million times.

Come to think of it you can drive up and down Fowler and find about 10 dives. They’re all around USF, so you know they’re going to have cheap drinks.

Don’s Irish Bar on 4th St. South is just a box with a couple of windows and a sign. I’ve never wanted to go, but it sounds like what you’re looking for and if you do take the time to drive out there, I’ll meet ya just for the hell of it.

    Have fun! Be careful!

[...] night found me with nothing to do and a commitment I had made here on Sticks that I had done nothing to fulfill so I headed north on 30th street in Tampa to check out the little bar across from Busch Gardens. [...]

I second the Overtime Pub. It seems like there’s never anyone in there, but that it could be a cool little place. I heard that they have guitar hero on a big screen, which besides LA Hangout I don’t know who else does that.

I work at overtime pub, it just reopened a couple months ago. Usually there is a happy hour (older) croud and there have been college kids coming in later at night. Never packed and the beers are CHEAP! Free pool, beer pong on wednesday, guitar hero on thursday. I definitely suggest it. PS- bartenders are no longer old ladies, two college ladies do it now :)
