the force is no longer with you

Steve remembers a discotheque in South Tampa, but not entirely. So he wants some help in completing that memory, and decided to Ask-A-Tampan:

Hi!

Back in the Seventies there was a Teen Disco called “The Force” but no one on my High School Alumni list seems to remember exactly where it was. I cannot find any reference to it online and the only thing I remember is that it was off of Gandy going towards Bayshore.

Does anyone remember? Can anyone help?

Thanks

Shane

Hey Shane! Your question reminds me of the ABC liquor lounge on Gandy at MacDill. They had a revolving dance floor, I think. And a fantastic happy hour buffet. Zichex was on Gandy at Dale Mabry. But both of those were kicking in the early ’90’s. Not sure of the landscape there in the 70’s.

We’ll have to ask our readers for help. Anyone remember “The Force?”

I believe the ABC lounge was called “J.D. Penguin’s and they did indeed have a revolving bar. “The Force” disco was down the road from them.

Sounds like a place over at Britton Plaza, near Tapper Pub. I thought it was late 70’s or early 80’s.

The Place near Britton was called Level III lounge and it was Big Daddy’s or somesuch after that. It then became “Graffiti’s” for a bit. The Force Disco was off of Gandy towards Bayshore BLVD

Actually, I think it was on Bayshore, south of Gandy. In an old building. I went there a few times with friends in jr. high. Funny to think about it again. :)

‘The Force,” I believe, was in the old Elks Lodge on Bayshore, as you’re heading south and curve to the right by Ballast Point, it was on the right side of B’shore. It wasn’t the dedicated use of that building — the Elks still met there — but I think it hosted disco crap on Friday and Saturday nights. You might remember the statue of an elk on the signage.

The force was in the olds Elks Lodge off of Bayshore. Remember this because you had to be 12 to get in and I went there on my 12th b-day, ha!
