The Florida State Fair opened with great weather and lots of excitement. If you haven’t been to the Fair in awhile, it has changed a lot. There are lots more entertainment areas with music and more. The rides in the Midway have become more attractive and cleaner looking. The games of skill have become more attractive. And food of every type and imagination are everywhere to entice your senses.

As a city dweller, I like the animals. The chickens, horses, cows, pigs, goats, bunnies - all of them. When was the last time you looked a rooster in the eyes? Watching the participants that have worked for months to have an entry brings you back to real classic Americana. You have to love it.

Keep your eyes open for a series of pools and tank with a seal show. If you don’t want to take one of them home at the end of the show, then you just plain missed it. From clapping, to retrieving, to dancing and more, this show alone was worth attending the fair.

There are many other exhibits to catch: crafts, agricultural, forestry, nature, and more. Don’t miss Cracker Country. This permanent cluster of relocated classic buildings in a 10 acre tree covered area can easily be missed while touring the Fair. It is a real Tampa and Florida treasure.

Fairs aren’t for everybody. But I like them. The exhibit hall is loaded with all kinds of stuff on display and for sale. Of course, several locations have cooking demonstrations happening in order to sell you pots and pans. My favorite this year was a very demonstrative guy selling carpet cleaner. His demonstration of how his ecologically aware product exceeded other carpet cleaners almost had me reaching for $22 from my wallet. Don’t miss him it is worth watching.

Food, food, and more food. Sausages with onions and peppers are everywhere. Other food opportunities exist, like bar-b-q bologna, turkey wings, and almost anything and everything you can imagine. We didn’t bring up beer - lots of places for that too.

With a weather forecast that looks almost perfect through the last day on Feb. 19th, the Florida State Fair gives you plenty of reasons to visit. Admission for Adults is only $10 and there is NO Charge to park. This is a bargain ! Let us know what you think.

Yes, the fried elephant ears are still there. Actually, it seemed like there was more food with more variety this year than ever. (And beer locations, too)

They need to charge for the parking if that would help them staff more people to control it and have it not be such a mess. I went to the Stevie Nicks concert Friday night and it took over an hour to get out of the place. I hear it’s like that at every concert that is there. It was so bad that it would make me not want to ever go to a concert at the amphitheater again. I would’ve like to have checked out the fair, and should have, had I known it would be such a nightmare getting out of the place. Ugh.

an hour wait to get out of there after a show isn’t bad, ok it’s bad, but we’ve gone to shows (a dave matthews show two years ago comes to mind) where we took two hours to get out of there.

    5. If you enjoy rock and roll music, I thought VOCAL TRASH @ the TUMS Family Theater was a real plus. High energy, creative, and just plain fun. So glad they were included in this years line up.
