times breaking news alert is really pathetic
The St. Pete Times, who almost NEVER sends me “breaking news,” shot one off today.
They couldn’t get the word out fast enough that they had a TIMES EXCLUSIVE! Wow! Cool! What’s going on? What happened? I opened the email.
A Largo official wants to undergo a sex change:
The mayor at his side, longtime Largo City Manager Steve Stanton disclosed to the St. Petersburg Times on Wednesday he is undergoing hormone therapy and counseling in preparation for a sex-change operation.
News? Sure. Breaking News? Maybe. But more urgent than, say,
Bay News 9 - Feb 19: “Widespread power outage in Pinellas County. Cause unknown.”
More urgent than
TBO.com News Alert - Feb 2: At least 14 people are reported dead in Central Florida after morning storms rip the state. Governor Crist to address Floridians at 10:30 a.m.
The Times sent me an alert for neither of these.
Now having said that, I’m certain you will see (have seen?) this story on every local station and in both papers tomorrow.

Sensation sells. News organizations aren’t there to give you unbiased news reports, they are there to make money. ANS, bald-hdeaded Brittney, and transgendered city managers all sell better than another report on Iraq or what the government is doing.
