Most sadly ironic picture ever.

Steve Stanton walks out of the commission chambers, while commissioner Mary Black, not pictured, discusses the wording on the amendment to fire him.Times photo: Jim Damaske

City commissioners ended one of the most tumultuous weeks in Largo history Tuesday night by moving to fire City Manager Steve Stanton following his disclosure that he will have a sex-change operation.

The linked article says, “But he also indicated he wouldn’t sue the city.”

I don’t understand this entire thing. OK, so we live in an intolerant world and red-neck, ass-backward people sit on the city council of largo (big news, right) — but we have anti discrimination laws in place that are supposed to bring balance to our society. When people break those laws - and do discriminate (and here it was so public) - it is not only your right to sue it is your obligation! If you don’t take them to court you make it that much harder for the next person to stand up and be who they are.

And yes, Tim… “City of Progress” is sadly ironic….

  2. dcdave Says:

I think that Largo’s defense will be that he was a “distraction”. What a crock.

  3. Michael Hussey Says:

Didn’t you people get the memo from the blogmaster. Tommy said this isn’t an important story.

  4. PortTampa Says:

“Didn’t you people get the memo from the blogmaster. Tommy said this isn’t an important story.” And it shouldn’t have been. It’s as if Beavis and Butthead were making the editorial decisions that made Stanton’s choice of reassignment surgery front page worthy. I hope it was the media glare that prompted the Largo city council to act as they did, and that they aren’t always as stupid as deer caught in the headlights.

  5. tommy Says:

Hussey - It would be helpful if you could show some simple comprehension skills. Read the post you linked to. Nowhere did I say the story isn’t important.

That Steve Stanton is getting a sex change is NOT worthy of a BREAKING NEWS update. That the City of Largo is firing him for it - that is something worth much discussion.

I know most Sticks readers could figure out the difference. Hope this helps to clear it up for you.

  6. Michael Hussey Says:

Tommy, you said yourself the story was not that “urgent.” We can substitute “urgent” for important. I’m willing to test my reading comprehension skills against your’s anyday. I seem to recall you telling me in an email that I’m smarter than you.

  7. tim Says:

You don’t even know where to properly place your apostraphes. I’ll take Tommy in this one. Do you not possess the basic intelligence to discern the difference between a story about Stanton getting a sex change and a story about Stanton getting fired?

  8. tim Says:

    Apostrophes.

  9. Michael Hussey Says:

Tim, Stanton hasn’t technicallly been fired, yet. The Largo city commission voted to start the termination process. We can play little poo games. Stanton is still on the payroll. Want to debate semantics some more?

  10. Michael Hussey Says:

You don’t even know where to properly place your apostraphes.

I was using quotation marks in this comment. Not apostraphes or apostrophes. Whichever spelling works for you, Tim. Thanks for the imput on my intelligence.

  11. kate Says:

Hey, DriveByBlogger, I have a nominee for you…

  12. tommy Says:

    Again…

Comprehension involves context. The phrase I used is “more urgent.” And “urgent” does NOT mean “important.” Regardless of all of that, I still say the man’s desire to be a woman is neither urgent NOR important to many folks, but the reaction of those in Largo should be important to all of us.

Michael, I’ve always thought you were an intelligent guy, and in the past you certainly have had legitimate points of view in regards to opinions here on Sticks of Fire. But those seem to have been replaced by obsessive nitpicking, and out-of-context whining about me, personally. And unfortunately your irritation with me has extended to others who write here. I recommend you take a look at a related word in the dictionary.

Oh, and to be clear: I’m not suggesting you should stop. You are entitled to do whatever you want, and I expect (and hope) that you will continue.

  13. tommy Says:

One more thing - Tim’s right: Apostrophes are NOT used for possessive pronouns or for noun plurals, including acronyms.

“I’m willing to test my reading comprehension skills against your’s anyday.”

    “your’s” should be “yours.”

  14. dcdave Says:

Michael, you’re off base. Tommy was right, it wasn’t an important story, so much as an intrusion into someone’s personal life. Much like opinions, time, the tides, people and the internets, this situation has changed. Now that the commissioners have placed their votes, this is an important story. They’ve gone beyond the pale and voted to fire someone for reasons that don’t pass the smell test.

To ALL: We can have a constructive discussion without sniping each other for punctuation and spelling errors. Obviously everyone here is capable of pounding their virtual chests, and we all have differing opinions, but when you leave the realm of substance and enter the realm of grammar and selective intelligence, you put yourself squarely in Dick Cheney land. Please don’t shoot me in the face.

  15. lyn Says:

    I agree with dcdave.

Michael and Tommy you both are acting like a couple of elementary school kids. What’s next for the two of you…..meeting on the play ground to fight?

  16. kate Says:

Tommy has every right to defend himself. Michael is obsessed.

Isn’t Largo the same place that jailed the 89 year old woman for trying to slow traffic down in her residential area? She’s feisty. And, what’s NO surprise is that she’s right. The cops don’t do their jobs, the mayors ignore it and clean up the city, the code enforcers are nazis who called the cops on this woman because she wanted to be able to cross the street safely but by god if someone wants to have a lop-a-dick-tomy, the Nazis unite. Largo — the city of run over arrested old women and progress.
To be fair — people said some unkind things about his work performance but they were mad at him BEFORE this. I also didn’t care for the fact that all the PTB run around together and have all kinds of time to discuss their personal lives on the DIME OF THE PEOPLE of Largo.
They are the ones getting screwed.

oooh sorry, the above comment was me too. I thought I was logged in.

Bloggers (and you know who you are) — be CITIZENS and REAL AMERICANS

I’ll just say this about blogger meet-ups. NO ONE is the undisputed leader in the blogs I have read. Some have much better real news up-to-date content and some are just more fun to read … I don’t appreciate the threatening comments I read at a local (scum) blog and he knows exactly who I mean. You kiss your mama with that mouth??

  20. voxpop Says:

ohhhh and I spent my time chalking “IMPEACH BUSH” wherever there was visible space. When THAT regime is OVER and it is — maybe then I will relax. Until then, that and how my city fits into that picture and what this city is doing to some of it’s citizens takes a bit more priority than other things and punctuation. Not to dis anyone at all but it’s pretty obvious that hussey has a grasp on the language and usage and that his errors are typos. He turns out more content than ANYONE. Perhaps the only true journalist among us — although Jim Johnson is kickin with his commentary his output is not as much. I look back lots of times and see my commas misplaced but, I learned WAY back not to judge people on the web like that — judge their content if you must judge at all. I’ve only seen Michael to be wrong once and that was when he said that he was not so widely read … JMO

Please take a second to email the city commission: Commission@largo.com
