crack dealer summoned to principal’s office

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

That’s right… to make a sale.

The principal of Van Buren Middle School has been arrested and charged with buying crack cocaine in his office from an undercover police officer, Tampa Police said.

Anthony Giancola, 40, has been taken to police headquarters for questioning.

In other role model news,

We don’t really dig the crime news here on Sticks, but these parents and educators… Well, they just suck.

bible belt bonanza!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Well, well, the Bible Belt weekend was pretty intense. Nashville is not the main draw to the area at all, though. The awesomest part of the whole trip was Kentucky, without a doubt. Nashville was OK. Rural Tennessee was very cool, but Kentucky was amazing.

The flight into Nashville was cheap, under $200, and the hotel, the Wyndham Union Station was fabulous. The building used to be a train station, and Wyndham renovated it to match its original look as much as possible. Original wooden timetables have been restored by artists who painted over the little numbers in the same font and crinkle-crackled pages from schedule books are framed throughout the lobby.

Everything in sight is marble, and the bed was so fluffy and cozy, I couldn’t help but kick like a crazy bike-rider once I got under the covers, giggling and smashing my face in the pillows, which had whole goose feathers sticking out from cotton weave. The kitchen also serves, daily, at three o’clock, some delicious kind of treat. One day it was chocolate marshmallow cookies. Another day it was chocolate chip cannolis. Very wonderful, all of it, and the connolis totally made up for the part where bottled water was four bucks a pop.

The main downtown area of Nashville was within five blocks of the Union Station, and that was a big part of why I picked it, but it actually turns out that downtown Nashville can be summed pretty quickly. Imagine five different venues in a row, only they’re all Mastry’s on Central Avenue in the ‘Burg. That’s Nashville’s bar scene - smoky, dingy and crowded with stumbling drunks in kinda dirty clothes.

The only joint that redeemed the place was Tootsies…

bloggers unite!

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Since we announced that we’re having a Tampa Bay Bloggers Meetup on Tuesday Feb 27th, I found a “Tampa/St. Pete Bloggers Meetup Group” over at Meetup.com.

They are having a get together as well, on Monday March 5th at the Panera Bread in Oldsmar (3181 Tampa Road) starting at 6:30pm. So the local blogging calendar has become quite busy… three events within six days:

  • Tuesday, February 27th, 6:00pm - Blogger Meetup - Hawks Neighborhood Grill, South Tampa
  • Saturday, March 3rd, 10:45am - Blog & Multimedia Seminar - Tampa Tribune Offices, Downtown Tampa
  • Monday, March 5th, 6:30pm - Blogger Meetup - Panera Bread, Oldsmar

I am going to try to make all three events… Should be an interesting week.

times breaking news alert is really pathetic

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

The St. Pete Times, who almost NEVER sends me “breaking news,” shot one off today.

They couldn’t get the word out fast enough that they had a TIMES EXCLUSIVE! Wow! Cool! What’s going on? What happened? I opened the email.

A Largo official wants to undergo a sex change:

The mayor at his side, longtime Largo City Manager Steve Stanton disclosed to the St. Petersburg Times on Wednesday he is undergoing hormone therapy and counseling in preparation for a sex-change operation.

News? Sure. Breaking News? Maybe. But more urgent than, say,

Bay News 9 - Feb 19: “Widespread power outage in Pinellas County. Cause unknown.”

More urgent than

TBO.com News Alert - Feb 2: At least 14 people are reported dead in Central Florida after morning storms rip the state. Governor Crist to address Floridians at 10:30 a.m.

The Times sent me an alert for neither of these.

Now having said that, I’m certain you will see (have seen?) this story on every local station and in both papers tomorrow.

zudar’s deli cafe

Wednesday, February 21st, 2007

On Monday, Traci and I had a chance to try out Marc and Didi Zudar’s Deli Cafe for lunch. We had never been before, but knew that the long-time restaurant family is known for their cakes and sandwiches. This Zudar’s is not to be confused with the since closed Zudar’s Deli Cafe location near SoHo, which the couple had previously sold and then allowed the new owner to use the name.

Marc and Didi Zudar’s Deli Cafe is located in a small nondescript building on W. Platt St. next to the Publix at Platt and Bayshore and a few doors down from the Irish bar Four Green Fields (best known for its authentic thatched roof). We arrived a little after noon at Zudar’s on Monday and the place was crowded with the lunch rush. We were lucky to grab a table for two soon after walking in.

There was a number of items on the menu I wanted to try, several soups and quiches sounded interesting, but I ultimately decided upon ordering a sandwich called “the Meltdown” - roast beef, bacon, provolone, lettuce and tomato on whole wheat. Traci ordered a traditional BLT on white. Our server was quick and relatively friendly considering that she was covering countless tables.

While my sandwich wasn’t Wright’s Gourmet House caliber (still my favorite local sandwich spot), it was very good. Traci also enjoyed her BLT (notice the bacon, no chicken!). We’ll likely drop into Zudar’s again sometime as I want to try out their freshly made soups and their cakes look killer. Two of the tables around us each ordered a slice of the coconut cream pie to share. These were the kind of big slices that look like they would put you to sleep after returning to the office.

My only gripe with my sandwich was that Zudar’s uses shredded lettuce which I’m not a fan of. Also, while my sandwich was a good size, and for the price (about $16 for the two of us with drinks) it was a fair deal, it wasn’t particularly “overstuffed” either. Finally, while the sandwich is what really matters, the included bag of plain chips was small and the pickle slice was even smaller.

Other local delis that we like for sandwiches, besides the fore mentioned Wright’s, includes Castellano & Pizzo, Mazarro’s Italian Market, Schiller’s German Delicatessen, and Interbay Meat Market. We still plan to give Mott & Hester Deli a try one of these days. We’ve also done Pane Rustica before for dinner, but not lunch. What good local sandwich places am I forgetting?

In case you were wondering, there aren’t any recent health inspection reports on Zudar’s available.

Bottom-line: Zudar’s may not have the best sandwiches in town (I still think Wright’s is top of the heap, although I know some of you think Wright’s is overrated), but you could definitely do a lot worse. A good lunch choice if you work in or around downtown Tampa.

Those of us who follow the sport of hockey were musing about the fate of the Tampa Bay Lightning while the team was merely mediocre through December. There were reports in Canada that head coach John Tortorella’s job was in danger, and reports here in Tampa Bay (even of recent) suggested the Lightning roster would be gutted in a salary dump if the team didn’t get it together on ice. Rumors of trades have swirled for months and months.

Those of you who did not take interest in the Bolts until the Buccaneers season ended, well, you’ve only seen one thing: One of the hottest teams in Hockey playing as well as the 2003-04 Stanley Cup Champions that we all knew so well.

The Lightning, in their overtime loss the other night to the Florida Panthers, gained possession of first place in the Southeast division. This is an achievement onto itself as the Lightning was floundering in the standings until early last month. But coupled with a collapse of the Atlanta Thrashers, Vincent Lecavalier (39 goals) and Martin St. Louis (35) becoming scoring dynamos and improved play by the special team units (those guys who kill penalties) the Bolts have simply changed from pretenders to contenders in a matter of weeks.

Keep an eye out on Vincent Lecavalier’s goal tally achievement. While leading the NHL in goals scored, Lecavalier is also just 3 goals shy of tying Brian Bradley for the all-time, single-season goal lead for the franchise (42). All while Martin St. Louis may find himself passing Bradley as well.

And just to note, Bolts fans, Bradley accomplished that feat during the 1992-93 season – the Lightning’s very first. It’s been a long wait for someone to challenge Bradley’s total…

Fortunately for the fans, it hasn’t been quite so long a wait to watch the Lightning play as one of the most thrilling teams in the game.
