what should be the city of tampa’s number one priority?

There’s a new poll up on the sidebar. I want to know about the city of Tampa’s biggest problem right now.

Mayor Pam wants to address traffic and mass transit issues. Maybe we need more maintenance on stormwater systems, roads with potholes, and parks in various states of disarray? Maybe you think that corruption runs rampant in the city. Are your taxes too high? Is spending too high? Too much growth? Not enough riverwalks? No one returns your call? Too many homeless folks? Something I have not thought of?

What is it? If your city government does NOTHING all year except fix ONE of these problems, which should it be?

I’m cheating, Tommy, because there’s no way I can pick just one thing. In short, I’ll sum it up with: urban sprawl (which is screwing up the roads and traffic), the homeless and property taxes.

If I make this poll read that 452,000 people want to focus on transit (light rail, not bypasses), will officials finally agree they’re 10 years behind?

  4. John Says:

Probably not, but even with 100 votes, we’ll bypass the turnout in too many precincts yesterday :p

    1. Improved mass transit including light rail
    2. More affordable housing
    3. a living downtown after 6pm
    4. New art museum
    5. a movement towards offering citywide/countywide group discount for health insurance to help business owners and individuals.

fyi: #5 is practically free and easy to setup.

3 is underway — Grand Central at Kennedy started closings last week (just depends how many move into those units), Skypoint starts closings next month, Element will add 400 more units by 2009… Not to mention the rest of the Channelside projects near completion, completed and under construction…

what you have to hope for are A) the unit buyers are not just real-estate speculators, B) businesses set up shop downtown to cater to these residents, C) the city improves conditions downtown for pedestrians.

I don’t get why more people here don’t see how eliminating sprawl will both revitalize downtown AND help alleviate traffic. I know developers don’t want to hear that, but it’s the truth.

A ton of cities figured this out in the 80s and 90s, but when you have a mayor that likes to build malls I guess that breeds another kind of culture.

After 50 votes recorded, traffic/transit is the top concern with 68% of the vote. Growth / well-managed-development is second with only 12% 6% say “downtown,” whatever that means.

So Tom Scott, and Charles Miranda won their districts. I believe if Joe gets elected over Gwen in the run off, I bet that Joe would rattle both their nerves. Tom Scott voted in favor of the Gay Pride ban, and left the room at County Commissions meetings whenever Joe spoke. And I know that Charles Miranda can not stand Joe for his strip clubs ie..the 6 foot rule. God I hope Joe wins! I love drama.

    Okay, here’s my $.02 worth:

    1. Time the traffic lights better and add cameras so intersection idiots (the ones who sit there while their light turns red and block your way when your light is green) get caught and ticketed more often.

    2. Dig some more potholes in the neighborhood side streets to make cut-through traffic much less pleasant.

    3. Widen Florida and Nebraska Avenues.

    4. Fix the flooding in South Tampa.

    5. Bike lanes, bike lanes, bike lanes.

    6. More facilities for telecommuting.

    2. Disagree (though I realize (?) you’re joking)
    3. NO! (I was actually in favor of them reverting Florida and Tampa back into two-way streets with a greenway from Downtown to MLK)
