florida, oh florida

The State of Florida is having a difficult time choosing a new official state song. In order to help out, I think you and I ought to put our heads together to offer an overwhelming favorite. Sure, we could vote on any of the ones being bandied about, but I think we can come up with our own. I’ve come up with a few lyrics, but need your help to make sure nothing is left out.

Any song about Florida must include something about sunshine, beaches, and orange juice. Likewise, Krispy Kreme and Waffle House should be in the mix, as well as some reference to insects. Probably alligators and palm trees too. I’m less certain about subjects such as shark attacks, tourism, Jimmy Buffett, and NASA, but unless you have other ideas, they’re gonna have to go in.

Please help out. In the comments, offer your some Florida references you can think of, and we’ll come up with a melody, and do our best to fit them all in.

Florida, oh Florida, The Southernmost State,…So rich in history and heavy debate. From the Panhandle counties to the Florida Keys, your weather and hospitality is always a breeze. Your many State Parks and Historic Forts, your numerous beaches and idelic ports. All are welcomed to bask under your warm sunny skies, such wonderful memories of days gone by.

The Florida music educators should never have been used to filter or decide on songs proposed as state songs. The first thing they did was make elitist rules which excluded a large percentage of Floridas singer songwriters, and all of Floridas citizens.Take a look at the website;http://justsingflorida.org and read the rules. Most musicians don’t read music.many can record a cassette.Few can record a CD.The US copyright office has not required sheet music, to copyright a song for many years. Most songs are from 2:40 to 3;30 minutes long.Only the winning song should have a sheet music requirement. Then one of the educators, who can read and write music, but has not a whit of ability to create, can do the process. They used To be called copyists.I suppose they still are. As I,and many other people have;contestants could have placed their songs as mp3s for free,on hosting sites. The whole world could have listened to them, with links to them from an existing web site. Then, a page could be put up on an existing site allowing email verifiable votes.Florida Has the websites. My song about Florida,”Sand In Your Shoes” is on http://esnips.com/web/usaflorida. I have 50 others on http://audiostreet.net/delbertwallegood.Unfortunately Florida government has little imagination. Most Ideas and decisions come from the elite and exclude the people. We can’t seem to get anything not written by a special interest group, worldcorp, biased politition,or a rich white guy.NPUBLICI

I wrote a review of the 3 songs now up for voting by Florida residents on my blog here: http://marcrocs.blogspot.com/2007/12/floridas-ne w-state-song-vote-my-review.html

If you listen to these songs your head might spin. You’ll have to imagine hearing the songs rerecorded and produced. These are demos, are not of broadcast quality, no record company would distribute these tracks as is and unfortunately all sound like choir hymns.

If I have to choose my vote goes to Florida (Where the Sawgrass Meets the Sky) by Jan Hilton. Out of the 3 this is the best choice. It follows a K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) method. Lyrically the song names things specific to Florida and tries to end with a bang. It’s the only one of the 3 songs in 4/4 time, meaning it could easily be re-produced or covered by musicians in many popular styles. Most important the song has a hook or motive which can be easily remembered.

PLEASE NOTE: after reviewing I’d rather we keep a reworded version of our current state song or even consider Margaritaville which I’ve jokingly been campaigning against for the past year or so. I make a living as a “Blue Collar Musician” playing a lot of resorts.

None of these songs comes close to our present great State song. This has all come about because Governor Crist has future nationwide ambitions so he has pandered to a group of vocal inner city legislators who want to re-write history. If we want a song about the new Florida than one about the old Florida then why dont we write something about our beautiful state being bulldozed away for developement or maybe something about Orlando and Miami competing for Murder capitals of the USA. Keep the present song. Its a good one.

There was nothing wrong with the current Florida song. Why not remove everything in Florida that has anything to do with our history. Just make up something that appeals to Snowbirds and minorites!
