two dead on i-75

Just south of the Sun City Center exit, two cars pulled over in the median of I-75. One of the cars had a flat tire, and the driver was changing it. The other nine people from the two cars were waiting in and around the vehicles.

As they passed, other drivers on I-75 would slow down to take a look. That action is sometimes referred to as “rubbernecking.” One driver did not slow down. That action is sometimes referred to as “not paying attention.” At the last moment, he swerved left to avoid the rubberneckers.

Jorge Garcia hit the broken-down Mazda and three of the kids standing around it. 14 year old Leona Paul died right there. 10 year old Austin Cox died at Tampa General. 14 year old Skylar Richardson was in critical condition Monday. Four other children, ages 5, 6, 8, and 11 were in the car when Garcia smashed into it. No one in Garcia’s car was injured.
