the sunshine state roundball update
First off, big ups to the Nationals who defeated Ecuador 3-1 in a friendly at Ray Jay over the weekend. I don’t pretend to know much about futbol but from what I understand American player Landon Donovan is finally living up to his potential, so yesterday’s win goes a long way towards making Sam’s Army a legit contender in the World Cup (I think). Plus it gives me an excuse to post a picture of some of Ecuador’s fans.
- The USF basketball head coach search heads into Day 17 and it could be at least another week before the Bulls lock down a replacement. Winthrop’s Gregg Marshall turned the job down yesterday after touring the facility’s (which is never a good sign). With two better coaching vacancies open (Kentucky and Michigan) it could be some time before USF finds the new head coach.
- After being knocked out of the NIT Tournament by Mississippi State last week the FSU basketball program stands at a crossroads. Al Thornton has carried the program so far, and even with his help head coach Leonard Hamilton could not get FSU into the NCAA Tournament. Thornton graduates this year, and I have not been impressed by anyone else on FSU’s roster, so I find it difficult to believe the Noles can improve on their 7-9 conference record.
- Finally, the Gators are in the Final Four for the second straight year, and people are underestimating this UCLA team. The Bruins are a much deeper team this season comapred to last, and were shooting lights out against Kansas on Saturday. And as long as we’re talking about head coaches it is absolutely insane that anyone thinks Billy Donovan would consider jumping from Florida to Kentucky. Maybe Wildcat fans are delusional enough to think different, but as it stands now Florida is a much better coaching job than Kentucky.

If Donovan wins the championship, he’s gone to Kentucky. He’ll have done it twice and a row, and don’t kid yourself, Florida doesn’t have anywhere near the history or tradition that Florida does. You win at Kentucky, you go in the history books. You lose, you end up a Gopher…

The US friendly at RJS was a great game. A record crowd of 31,000+ was on hand to witness the first game of the national team since the World Cup last year. The record was for the largest crowd to see the US National Team play a match in Florida. The Rowdies drew 50,000+ back in the day frequently. If we want to be an international area, international football ( soccer) is the best way to do it.

the kentucky fan base’s response to all this has borne an eery similarity to the crimson tide’s search for a football coach. both programs are no where near as good as they once were.
and donovan has handled this incredibly poorly and is setting his team up to lose against ucla. donovan is seeking a big new contract from the gators (he has been in negotiations for sometime with UF). UF’s AD needs to step in and tell donovan privately right now that UF will show donovan the money, so donovan can publicly state he does not want the kentucky job.
