A bit more on the Trib’s cost-cutting from the Tampa Bay Business Journal. In addition to the seventy layoffs,

The Tampa Tribune will also transition the content of its geographically-zoned sections into its community newspapers that better provide highly local news and better connect readers and advertisers. The Tribune also will launch a number of local and interactive community Web sites as extensions of TBO.com.

The newspaper will reduce its page width by one-half inch, or a reduction of four percent, this fall to reduce newsprint expense. Distribution of The Tampa Tribune in Citrus, Manatee and Hardee… will be discontinued.

TBO already has been pushing readers of the Brandon News, Suncoast News Pinellas, and Suncoast News Pasco (all “Powered By Your Voice)” online. You can see the difference from existing Central Tampa, Temple Terrace, or Plant City tbo sites.

so we continue to see the slow rot of a newspaper…

WHy don’t they just cancel coverage outside the city limits of Tampa? After all, Media General likes to have small town newspapers and Tampa isn’t as big as, say, Jacksonville (city limit population wise).

And to think they were making a big deal about “Tampa Bay Times” this time last year. The phrase “Tampa Bay” invokes regionalism. They’re trying to save money and slowly consolidating regional coverage.
