“Hot Fuzz” Brings Brit Wit To Cop Genre

Brit wit at its most lovingly twisted fills “Hot Fuzz,” a batch of laugh-out-loud lunacy from the team that gave us “Shaun of the Dead.” Co-scripted by director Edgar Wright and star Simon Pegg (who played Shaun in their riotous zombie spoof), this cop-flick parody kicks off at a grand, giggly pace and keeps accelerating.

Pegg plays London super-cop Nicholas Angel — an officer so devoted, so skilled and so obnoxiously adherent to the rules that no one can stand him. So his bosses arrange to pack him off to the quietest, most distant outpost they can find.

The officious Angel soon meets his matches. The apparently crime-free village where he’s stationed turns out to be a hotbed of — well, all sorts of foolishness. Nick Frost (the slovenly roommate in “Shaun”) is a scene-stealer as Angel’s bumbling partner who worships grade-B Hollywood action thrillers.

Just when you figure these guys are out of jokes, they turn a corner and plow into a fresh stack of mockery.

English small-town humor was never so bloody surprising. But it’s bloody in a goofy, charming fashion.

One fo the smaller must-see movies of the spring/summer. Peter Jackson makes a cameo, so does Cate Blanchett and others.

“Shaun of the Dead” alone sells this movie (to me) as something that must be checked out. How “Shaun” was told — in a stand-on-it’s-own parody way — makes me wonder and want to see what Pegg and Wright have done for the buddy cop flicks.

sounds like fun, and we can all certainly use some comedy

your succinct, well-written reviews set a standard that few could dream of matching

it’s beyond comprehension that tribune ingrates did not appreciate your talent.

    keep up the great work!

I saw the movie yesterday. Hilarious! I haven’t seen a movie that funny in years. It almost makes me want to watch “SHAUN OF THE DEAD” . . . it it were not for my dislike of zombie movies.

Rosie? Personally I hate Zombie Movies but they make such a mockery of them and it’s such a character driven film. I never watch zombie movies (Sans “28 Days Later” which I liked) but I could appreciate the entire “Shaun” concept.

Just go to IMDB.com and look up the film (shaun of the dead) and view the trailer. That alone could and should sell the movie for you.
