This is just more “penny wise, pound foolish” thinking by the trib.

Cost-cutting themselves right out of being relevant, but trying to mask this move behind citizen journalism push etc-

lisa: the guest editorials were in the trib, one of the biggest wastes of space ive ever seen. the reasons they run are these:
1/pandering to readers, i.e., ‘we care about what you think’…haha. not.
2/much cheaper than paying to run syndicated op-ed material from actual writers, i.e., nyt, washpost columnists etc. that readers are expecting to see on the op ed page for their 25 cents.

Oh, crap. It just occurred to me that I’m not 100% sure that the guest commenters/editorials were in the Trib and not the SPT. Oh well. I’m sure I’ll hear about it if I got them mixed up. (There’s so many papers and blogs to read every day…)

I’ll confess up front that I signed up and hope I get picked. Get to see movies for free? Bring it on!

Will the general public care about what a bunch of nobodies thinks about movies? Probably as much as they care about the guest editorials the Trib runs or used to run (they’re called the Trib’s “community contributors” or something like that, I think). I’m guessing not a whole lot.

In today’s Trib, the Friday Extra cover story about a local film was written by Walt Belcher, the Trib’s TV critic. Nothing against Belcher, but I wonder how the Trib decided between him and Ross? Flip a coin? Tails, let Ross write about TV too; heads, make Belcher cover movies as well.

I wonder if the Trib will pick me even though I wrote “damn you, Tampa Tribune, for firing Bob Ross” on my blog? Hmmmm. Again, I’m guessing not.

As I say repeatedly, the Tribune is always in cost-reduction mode — thinking of ways to scale back to boost Media General’s stock reports.

And the Tribune has gone from a regional newspaper into this new dumbed down print that keeps getting slashed while trying to remain relevant regionally (the free newspapers tossed on the curb every Saturday).

Not to hijack the thread but I wonder if there is room in Tampa Bay for another major daily newspaper? And I’m not talkign about the give-away papers from teh Times.

That’s just more low rent than I can imagine. It’s the same as having people report the temperature and rain gauges in their backyard to TV meteorologists. Well no, the meteorologists are actually pros. Congratulations, Tampa Trib, you’ve just turned yourselves into a small town paper! Look forward to seeing your articles on Letterman soon.

This is bullshit. The MSM and Republicans are working too hard to make us believe that we don’t need the FREE PRESS anymore.
Are we the press? Yeah. Right.
It’s too obvious. Like with social security .. a bunch of bush cronies selling their fricking souls to get us to sell ours.
Don’t fall for it.

I’m watching this and watching who is really pronouncing this ‘falling by the way side and “conglomeration” of big media’ being a good thing.
It’s a bit odd that they are all Republicans or people whom I regard with a good deal of suspicion.
My Republican FRIENDS would hve nothing to do with ending the free press.
They needa knock it off.

This isn’t journalism, just schlock filler.

One reason Bob Ross was a trusted critic for over 20 years is that people could depend on his expertise and knew his tastes, so could judge whether the movie was worth their time and money. Not to mention he was a seasoned journalist and fine writer.
