This Saturday, May 5 is Clean City Day in Tampa. Nope – I didn’t know either, so I looked on ye ol’ TampaGov.net to find about Clean City Day:
As part of the “Great American Clean Up” (March – May), the Clean City Division is organizing the 1st Annual City of Tampa 2007 Clean City Day. The Clean City Day is scheduled for May 5, 2007 at Raymond James Stadium in the south parking lot from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM, which will be the main staging area and registration. This will be the kick-off for the “Keep Tampa Clean Campaign”. Volunteers will be assigned to help clean up their Tampa Neighborhoods within our 5 Districts (New Tampa, North Tampa, East Tampa, West Tampa and South Tampa).
The Clean City Day “Clean Up” Initiative includes:
- 1. Removing litter, trash and debris citywide
- 2. Partnership/Sponsorship Fundraiser – (Golf Tournament) Rocky Point Golf Course on April 20, 2007
- 3. Citywide Trash Receptacle Program
- 4. Unveiling the City of Tampa, New Anti-Litter Campaign
- 5. Implement the Adopt-A-Street Program
- 6. Through volunteers (private/public sector), move the City of Tampa up into the Top 10 Cleanest Cities within the United States
- 7. “Keep Tampa Clean Campaign” – Quarterly Clean Ups
“Cleaning Up Tampa From The Ground Up” will take a collective effort on everyone’s behalf, as the City of Tampa is comprised of 333,040 city residents within a 116.1 square mile radius.
We invite you to be part of the City of Tampa “Clean City Initiative” to make the City of Tampa a cleaner place to live, work, play and visit.
That’s right – the City of Tampa has a Department of Clean. They even have their own logo! And, of course, they clean stuff – in ten key areas:
of the Interstate Highway System – Entrance/ Exit RampsI guess they do more than just clean, huh? Lots of landscaping and “improving” there, too. Sounds to me like they might should be called the Department of Pretty.

It is good to learn what Tampa is doing. I hope we can borrow a few good ideas. St. Pete has a big cleanup on Sat. May 19th. Our city is looking at helping residents clean Bartlett Park while learning better methods to keep all neighborhoods clean. The city will be giving a lot of support to residents and the Council of Neighborhood Associations is asking all of its member associations to pitch in.
At the end of the day all the streets will be swept. Then the tough part is keeping it clean.
Our streets drain into Bayboro Harbor. After a good rain this beautiful harbor is covered with floating garbage. The two largest drainage basins in the city drain in this body of water so a lot of litter and pollution is swept this way. But our stormwater is not treated as it heads toward the bay.
On the West end of town our trash is washed into Clam Bayou in Gulfport. Some blame the boaters but we need to stop pollution coming from our streets.
Tax reform is in the news. How come litter gets a tax break in Florida? Many states use a tax or deposit on drink containers to keep beer bottles out of landfills and off our streets. It works. Market based solutions reduce pollution.
