three more weeks in tampa bay

We only have about three more weeks in Tampa.

Traci and I will be moving at the end of the month up to Gainesville. I’m starting work in the fall on a Ph.D in mass communication at the University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications. We didn’t think we’d be moving until the end of June, but Traci just landed a job that starts in a few weeks so off we go.

I’ve enjoyed greatly contributing to Sticks over the past year, particularly the reader feedback (thanks for the regular flow of new restaurant ideas). It has also been nice to meet some of the Sticks writers in person. Tommy has really built something special and it has been cool being a small part of it.

Sticks will soon introduce another restaurant reviewer, and I plan to maintain my FloridaFoodHound.com blog. All of my archived Tampa Bay restaurant reviews will remain available, and I hope to post on occasion about Gainesville and North Florida restaurants.

It’s not like I’ll be moving a thousand miles away, and we plan to visit every couple months, so I may have a few more restaurant reviews up my sleeve once in a while if Tommy will still have me.

So, If you only had three more weeks in Tampa, where would you go to eat? What restaurants would you visit one last time? What would you order? Send me your ideas and we’ll try to hit some of them over the next few weeks and (of course) share our experiences with you.

Thanks for reading!

You and I are hauling ass around the same time. You’re going up the road and I’m heading west. So sad! Tommy should so throw us a going away party. Yes. That’s what I think.

Hit Armani’s. I love it there. Food, service, and view. Cannot be beat.

I just love the atmopshere and food at Mad Dogs and Englishman.

  3. Meredith Says:

Mad Dogs, Mel’s Hot Dogs, definitely the Wine Exchange before it closes, Ceviche, La Teresita but you were just there…that’s a start, anyway.

  4. David Jenkins Says:

Ceviche … I left that one out - good call, Meredith.

if you dont to find decent restaurants in tampa anymore, youre probably lucky. on the other hand, you’ll be seaching for grub in a florida ‘college town.’ oh well, beer is food, too.

i think id head over to frenchy’s on the beach in clearwater at sunset for my last meal. its the quintessential florida beach spot, and the food is much better than it has to be, considering all the touristas. beers for 2.50 with beach view? you gotta be kidding…..

    bon voyage…..

  6. Joel Says:

Mise En Place, Restaurant BT, Ceviche -and Mel’s, just to avoid being all snooty.

Call it what you will, but, if I had one last restaurant visit in Tampa, it would probably be Bern’s. It would be ending the adventure in Tampa on a high, albeit high-priced, note.

  8. Amanda Says:

Acropolis. As for Gainesville restaurants, the musts are Mildred’s Big city and new deal cafes (really 2 restaurants), Paramount grill, and the Top.

  9. gar Says:

I have never been to Bern’s, so I would agree with WP.

These are lots of great suggestions. Thanks to all for sharing.

I think we’ll definitely hit Mel’s now before we move.

Have been to the original and St. Pete Ceviche already. As well as Bern’s and Mise En Place.

As for Mad Dog’s like the atmosphere and food isn’t bad, but have never had good service there, maybe just my luck.

Armani’s sounds interesting, as well as the Sunday brunch at Oystercatcher’s as sort of a splurge. Either there or the brunches at the Vinoy or the Don before we go.

Frenchy’s is a good idea too. I also still have lots of memories of Ted Peter’s, love their fish spread.

Again, thanks to everyone for the ideas. At the end of the month, I’m outta here :)
