tampa has nice drivers, but we’re no portland

A year ago, AutoVantage claimed Miami had the rudest drivers in America. Tampa was not included in the survey of the 20 biggest markets.

In their second annual survey, they ranked 25 big metro areas, and found that Tampa has the 10th nicest drivers in the nation. Again, Miamians are the rudest in the country, and this year, the very nicest hail from Portland. Can you picture it?

“Hello there fella, nice to meet you at this four-way stop. Please feel free to drive at your convenience.”
“Hi there! I appreciate your generosity, but I have no need to hurry. You go ahead, I’ll wait.”
“Ah, you look lovely today, and I left the house with plenty of extra time. Plus, it’s not my turn to go through. You ought to proceed at your convenience.”
“Very well, kind sir. But I must say that you are one of the nicest folks I’ve met. You must be from Portland.”
“And I noticed that you are using your directionals. I’d guess you are a local, too.”
“Close. I am from Pittsburgh.”

Or not.

Um, right, that’s all well and good, except driving isn’t personal.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to pass someone on the right because they were doing something like 60 in a 65 in the left lane during rush hour only to find in the rearview, about two miles later, that they were doing their best to catch up with me and that if I let them, they are FURIOUS they were passed. Losers. You’ll never get anywhere that way.

Slow lanes and blinkers - dumb asses need to use ‘em.

The article indicated this is based on reports of road rage, but not if it was the respondents rage or rage witnessed by respondents. One must wonder if it was the latter, perhaps Tampa drivers just had their attention too buried in their cellphone to notice.

Living in Portland for quite a few years, I have to say that the picture painted is a bit inaccurate. Everywhere that you go, there are strange driving habits adopted by drivers. Here, for instance, it’s lining up in the middle of the intersection in the left turn lane. It’s a local habit. I tried it in Texas and almost got killed.
Portland has their own kind of crappy drivers. It’s just a different kind of crappy than here.
