Army 1st Sgt. Alan N. Gifford

39, of Tallahassee, Fla.

assigned to the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga., killed Sept. 16 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his M1A1 Abrams tank during patrol operations in Baghdad. Also killed was Spc. David H. Ford IV.

Alan was born Aug. 7, 1966, in Fayetteville, N.C., and grew up in Tallahassee. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1984, where he excelled in football and baseball. Alan joined the Army in 1986 and quickly moved up the ranks… He loved his family and his faithful dog, Dakota. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, backpacking and playing golf.
