assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Twentynine Palms, Calif.; attached to 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward); killed Oct. 23 by enemy small-arms fire while conducting combat operations against enemy forces in Ramadi, Iraq.

Cpl. Spears grew up in Molino, played four years on the Tate High School football team’s offensive line and graduated in 2002… He joined the Marines a year later. He told his parents he was proud to serve in Iraq and proud to know he was helping nurture a fledgling democracy.
