I think the name change from Devil Rays to just Rays in ridiculous. Devil Rays is a pretty cool name and now your team is named after a beam of light? Also why switch to generic looking uniforms and plain blue (which many other teams wear) when the blue/green combo looked cool and was very unique. Now you look like every other MLB team and have a dumber nickname.

Part of this is a repost:

Dropping the DEVIL from the name because of religous bias has alienated me. Ive been supporting the team since ‘99 ( a year after the inaugrial season)…I watched Boggs homer for 3000…I watched Paul Sorrento hit a BOMB HR…I watched(on TV) as Esteban Yan hit his first HR in his first ever at bat at Shea during interleague. I survived the debacle of the Hit Show. Ive been there for the good times and Ive been there for the bad ( and there were a LOT of those). I wouldve remained a fan over a complete name change, but I wont remain a fan over a name edit due to religious bias. Doesn’t matter any more: they have officially lost me as a fan….Time to dig out my old Mets gear from the closet...Congrats you complaining bible-thumpers: You Won - I hope you spend as much money as I did on tix and merchandise

Thank you for speaking for us real Devil Ray fans on this issue. I have been saying these exact things to anyone who would listen ever since I first heard that the name and colors would be changed. I find it a little offputing that the new ownership group just rode into town and started rewriting our history like they were doing us some kind of favor. I appreciate their efforts to improve the Trop, our minor league system, and our overseas scouting/player development. But I don't appreciate them changing our name. When we become a good team, it would be much more meaningful if we did it as the Devil Rays. Did the Buccaneers or Lightning change their name because they were bad? No, they took names that were synonomous with losing and made them synonomous with Championship play. As for the colors, I have yet to find a Devil Ray fan who likes the idea of changing from Green (unique) to Blue (all too common) despite the fact that management claims to have done focus groups. Sternberg has openly stated that he really likes blue, so I guess he feels that's as good a reason as any to change your colors.

I'm disappointed they're getting rid of the green, because green is a color that is very unique in major league baseball. We're one of only two teams that has green as a major color. That having been said, I understand why the NDRO would want to cut away any semblance of the old administration.
