sunpass overcharges

The website says “Welcome to SunPass, where you save on tolls.”  Hmmm, we’re not so sure about that.  How it works:

As you drive through the SunPass lanes, the proper toll amount is deducted from your Prepaid Account.

We’re not so sure about that, either.  It seems they take a little bit of liberty with the word “proper.”  The SunPass lanes may be overcharging you. Big-time.

It almost makes sense.

Sometimes you go through the SunPass toll booth, you don’t hear the little beep, and find that you are not charged at all.  But to make up for it, Tampa Bay’s 10 Mike Deeson says that SunPass charges more than they should on occasion.

“There was no way possible I had gone through the toll plaza that often to chew up 50 bucks.”

Beabes went online, checked his account and saw several charges for axle adjustments. He called SunPass.

“And they were trying to explain to me, it was because you were pulling a trailer or something through one of the toll booths,’” Beabes says. “And I tried to explain to them I have an SUV. I’ve never towed anything through the toll booths, and there shouldn’t be these charges.” Beabes also discovered there were even double charges at the same time, or within seconds of a charge.

SunPass told him that a lot of times when someone is riding through a toll plaza and somebody is riding the bumper, that person will get charged for both vehicles‘ tolls.

Sounds like “axle adjustments” and double billing is routine. You better keep track of your travels through local toll roads, otherwise you’ll be paying too much. I highly recommend you check your SunPass charges online.

Will do…as soon as I figure out that account number that they assigned to me 5 years ago. Any day now, it’ll come to me! Yep.
