tax cut approved - is it good?
The big news is that your Florida Legislature has cut property taxes, and you will get to vote if you want more cut. Since they left that second part up to you, and we won’t find out until next year, I want to know only about the rollback and cap that has already been made law. I got a couple questions for you:
- How much will it save you?
- Is that enough?
- Will it be fair for everyone?
- Are you satisfied?
The Orlando Sentinel offers a tax cut calculator, but only for local governments in their distribution area. I couldn’t find a similar gimmick for Tampa Bay. If you know of a local version of this, please leave the URL in the comments.

So if we vote on it Jan 29th it means the state legislature failed to address our needs of THIS year. Thanks for nothing guys.

Bad news: Education funding is in trouble.
Good news: With lower property taxes, everyone’s stupid kids may still be able to afford a house.

But, but, I thought the Lottery was supposed to fund education. It’s all a bunch of lip service as usual. Sure we’ll see a small reduction to the tax bill, but will feel the pinch more in a decrease in services because budgets were spent as though the bubble would last forever instead of wisely investing in the future. Since property speculation was a big part of the run-up in valuations and taxes, how about the State get a cut of the capital gains tax, or a sales tax on real estate transations so the cost is passed along to those who most deserve it? How about bigger impact fees so the stretching of services by new development is paid for by those doing the stretching?
I’m paying triple what the previous owners did, but as a DINK I’m utilizing a fraction of the infrastructure.
