tampa looks different these days

It’s more for the geek than for the general populous, but Google Earth has updated their satellite photos of Tampa. The images in place now look to be from approximately late 2005. How can we tell? The construction boom in Channelside is only beginning in these photos and the Skypoint Condo tower was in it’s early stages of construction. In the previous photos — Channelside remained the warehouse district and Skypoint’s location on Ashley Drive was a parking structure for TECO.

The update does not include Pinellas county, where the photos can give you an idea of their age by what landmarks are intact or not (for instance — the Clearwater Beach roundabout fountain (demolished in 2002) still stands, and a carnival at Tropicana Field remains a distinguishing landmark from the old photo set).

For those who do not have Google Earth, you’re able to access these pictures (along with many others) on Google Maps.

The updates extend all the way to Pasco County, at least the Meadow Pointe neighborhood. I know this much because I found my car!

Looks like this picture was probably from Jan/Feb 2006. You can see that “NFL Playoffs” was printed on the field. Thus indicating that this could be shortly after the debacle against the Redskins in the (season of) 2005 playoffs.
