good question, joe

Did you see this? The City of Tampa may purchase the land where Trump Tower was supposed to go. Mayor Pam Iorio:

“We want to make sure that part of the Riverwalk gets built in a timely manner,” Iorio said. “The owners first have to be willing to sell and it has to be a reasonable price, but this could be a continuation of what we’ve already done, so it makes sense.”

My first thought was “How on earth can you even bring that up when you have plans to discuss the effects of budget cuts this week?”

Well, when Iorio went to explain her plans for budget cuts, City Councilman Joseph Caetano had the same thoughts as I:

Councilman Joseph Caetano questioned why the city is looking into buying the Trump Tower Tampa property if the condo isn’t built.

“How can we get involved in something like that?” Caetano said.

I don’t see where he got an answer.

Probably a matter of allocation and distribution. Here’s a link to the city press release about it:

Looks like they would do it in partnership with something called the Florida Communities Trust.

FCT offers grants for part of the cost. http://www.floridacommunitydevelopment.org/fct/about.cfm

They would still have to go though a competitive application process.

The dirty little secret about all these cuts is starting to come out … St. Pete will actually STILL be getting more money from taxes than they did this year … not the drastic “loss” that they claim. Is Tampa in the same boat? (I realize that some services would stil be affected, but it would seem that you wouldn’t have to cut so many services so dramatically if you were asically holding the budget FLAT.) But then again, when you have bloated by increasing your income by 70% in less than 4 years, you really aren’t used to dealing in realistic numbers, are you?

I don’t really know about Tampa, jim might, but I do know if you cruise over to the Tampa City jobs site there is a freeze in place for most positions right now unless they are identified as critical.

I don’t know anything about where the money would come from for the TTT site.

Sounds like a good spot for a museum though.

oh gosh, that was ALWAYS a thinly disguised effort that belonged to the city. (gambling the old bolita crowd all bellied up the american way)

Don’t you remember them all wetting themselves over the trump name?? Then I started pointing out to them that they were kicking me around over my property in the gambling area and the casino they are planning and then donald went away. Yep, that’s the order it happened in. My suggestion to the city of tampa and PAM would be to save that money, honey. A. you still have to pay for my house which you HAVE TO HAVE. B. you still have to defend the federal lawsuit(s) resulting from the illegal actions of city and county employees and ASSORTED THUGS around my property, family and personal vehicle and self.
    This just makes me laugh.
I personally think Donald backed out because this idiot city could not manage to tie up it’s nefarious property deals. Ask the guy who pretended to divorce his wife so they could both homestead-exempt homes as he picked up the riverfront properties around my hood. Ask those who the city awarded lucrative licenses to who then bought up the homes in my hood. They’re screwed. They know it. We’re MORE screwed. But, I’m going to get my money out of them for what they have put my family through.
And, those lil snarky but not too brainy city attorneys ??? better get you some new actors down there, pam.
    You make me laugh.
City buying it, indeed. They were never letting it out of the family in the first place. They’d pay ME if they could figure out a way to force me to reinvest in Tampa.
LOL !!! That will soooooo happen.

Hey Dave, this is my favorite part of that link you gave….
June 13, 2007 – The collapse of the Trump Tower project gives the city of Tampa a chance to buy the tiny downtown tract on the Hillsborough River, a plot that is wholly inappropriate for a skyscraper.

A 52-story condominium on this postage-stamp parcel would wall off the river and create an oppressive concrete canyon along the water.

Who the HELL approved this?? HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAA Okay, I guess that leaves Mayor Pam and the City Council … one of whom would have been Rose Ferlita and another of whom was Tom Scott.

you have to wonder .. why didn’t the city leap to this before when the price was right??
    WHY>>>
Because they and their ‘new people’ buddies are all in bed with la donald oh and STILL ARE. Ask around. It doesn’t take a rocketscientist when 19-yr.-old fitness dudes know the score. LOL !!!

    any early favorites for Mayor in 2011. This is who I have heard may be interested;

    John Dingfelder,Linda Saul-Sena,Tom Scott & Rose Ferlita.

Not sure what Bob Buckhorn is going to do and nobody has seen Sanchez since 2003. Any thoughts

Linda Saul-Sena. Talked to her about running close to a month ago at an art gallery showing in Ybor. Surprised she came but hey, she’s never shied away from Ybor City like Iorio. Linda is a BIG, BIG historic preservation buff. She was very instrumental years ago in getting the National Historic District designation for Ybor City.
I’d campaign for her if she ran.

Rose Ferlita would be good too but we need to keep her on the County Commission. Lose her, lose what’s left of integrity with those self-serving nit wits.

    Comment on Voxpopuli’s Neighborhood

Ride down Palm Ave. between North Blvd and Tampa St. See the loss of old homes and the HUNDREDS of LARGE oak trees removed in preparation of the “Glorious River Walk”. The City of Tampa would have NEVER let an individual homeowner rip those huge oaks trees out of the ground.
It’s really a pitiful site. Like a bomb leveled it. The City is also trying to get their grubs on the Crusacade Club at the base of the North Blvd Bridge on the Hillsborough River. The club has about 50 years left on their lease with the City but so what?!! Pam wants it as the northern bookend of her Riverwalk so there ya’ go.
