PointSmartClickSafe is a site initiated by the cable industry where parents can learn about online safety and appropriate use of the internet by children. Pointsmartclicksafehome_3The site is full of information, tools, and resources to help parents keep their kids safe online.

The site focuses on three key areas of understanding: 1) Control, including parental control software; 2) Education, especially media literacy; and 3) Choice, how to teach children to make the right choices online.

The site uses a clever flash animation to make it seem as if you are flipping through the pages of a book as it addresses these topics. Links and videos are found throughout the virtual book’s pages along with the information. OK, the videos are as hokey as any after-school special, maybe even worse. That being said, the site is a good resource for anyone who feels as if their children know so much more about those new-fangled computers that there isn’t anything that they, as a parent, can teach their kids about them.

These books and parental controls are fine; however, the best tool against inappropriate use of computers by children is parental supervision. You don’t teach your kids to swim and then leave them alone in the pool.

    Cause it’s dangerous.

Well, how about putting the computer in the family room and keeping your eyes on the kid? When they’re younger, park your fat *ss right next to Junior and, oh I don’t know, parent? Give good guidance perhaps? Offer an opinion or two?

If you are the type of parent out there who parks a television, dvd player, computer and phone inside Princess’ room, buys a book or two, and hopes for the best…well…good luck with that.

I agree, computers and TV’s should not go in a childs room. I want the kids in my view when doing both. The TV I gave in at 13 for my teen but the computer…still not in her room at 17!

I also like the parental controls programs, books, etc. because I can not have my fat a** right next to her the entire time. Parents need all the help we can get!
